The Abyss
The Abyss (2025)
The symbolism of the abyss is a fascinating one. For Jung, it was the shadow, a container of repressed unconscious content that must be brought to light to achieve the desired individuation. In mythology, the abyss often represented a mysterious place that gods had to traverse to bring about transformation. For Christians, the abyss is frequently portrayed as hell or the bottomless pit, into which Christ descends to bring salvation to those in prison. In mysticism, the abyss symbolizes the depths of the human heart and the journey of facing unconscious thoughts, desires, memories, and fears to realize that we are not these fragments but the one who witnesses them.
I love studying symbolism and how archetypal symbols permeate different cultures and times, often carrying similar meanings despite their varied contexts.
