Woman life freedom (2022)

In September, Mahsa Amini, a 22 year old woman from Iran, died after being beaten up inside a police van because she was wearing her hijab improperly (too much hair protruding from a head scarf).

Protests in Iran and all over the world for women rights and freedom fired up. Under the laws of the Islamic Republic, women were not just subjected to compulsory veiling but also gender segregation. Their protest slogan was “Woman, Life, Freedom”.

Iran blocked the internet, social media as Mahsa Amini protests grew. Social media platforms also blocked content that supports the Iranian protests. Numerous journalists and citizens were arrested and/or suffered a violent response.

Iranian women continue to demand a role in politics and society, even after the promise of the Islamic Republic to restore their dignity did not become a reality.

This is my contribution to the ““Woman, Life, Freedom” project, which invited me to create an artwork for the movement; which will have an exhibition in a near future.

I’m always driven by the cause of freedom.

“Life without liberty is like a body without spirit” - Khalil Gibran
